April 15: The Tax Man Cometh
I have decided to let past Presidents speak on my behalf today in regards to taxes:
“[April 15] is the last day for filing income tax returns — a day that reminds us that taxpayers pay too much of their earnings to the Federal Government. … While April 15 serves as a reminder, the people of the United States truly do not need to be reminded. They are victims of inflation, which pushes them into higher tax brackets. They are robbed daily of a better standard of living. They are discouraged from work and investment. … The choice before us is clear. I strongly feel that the great majority of Americans believe that nothing would better encourage economic growth than leaving more money in the hands of the people who earn it. It’s time to stop stripping bare the productive citizens of America and funneling their hard-earned income into the Federal bureaucracy.” -President Ronald Reagan
“To take from one, because it is thought his own industry and that of his fathers has acquired too much, in order to spare to others, who, or whose fathers, have not exercised equal industry and skill, is to violate arbitrarily the first principle of association, the guarantee to everyone the free exercise of his industry and the fruits acquired by it.” -President Thomas Jefferson
“When more of the people’s sustenance is exacted through the form of taxation than is necessary to meet the just obligations of government, such exaction becomes ruthless extortion and a violation of the fundamental principles of a free government.” -President Grover Cleveland
“Blessed are the young, for they shall inherit the national debt.” -President Herbert Hoover
