American Idiot
What do you really know about our constitution, government, and politics? Intercollegiate Studies Institute has published the results of a Civic Literacy test given to Americans. The results are pretty alarming though not all that surprising.
- Less than half can name all three branches of the government.
- Only 21% know from where the phrase “government of the people, by the people, for the people” comes.
- Only 53% know who has the power to declare war.
- Only 27% know the Bill of Rights’ stance on establishing an official religion for the United States.
Out of the 2,508 respondents, those who have held elective office earn an average score of 44% on the civic literacy test, five percentage points lower than the average score of 49% for those who have never been elected.
So the question is, what do you know? Take the test, then read more about the results.
Good luck!
NOTE: If you want to know what I scored, leave a comment and I’ll respond.
UPDATE: I scored an 87.88%
