Presidential Debates: What Would You Ask?
The second of three presidential debates was last night. If you didn’t see it, you didn’t miss anything. So incredibly boring. The candidates gave their same ‘ol spill on the same ‘ol issues. We’ve heard it before. It’s not really the candidates fault tho, it was the format. The selected questions weren’t very interesting, and any chance for the conversation to go that way was stifled by Tom Brokaw.
I could go over what was said, but I think what would be more interesting is to look at questions that were not asked. Here’s a list of questions I would have asked:
- Which Article of the Constitution deals with the Presidency?
- What has been the long-term impact of the 17th Amendment?
- Do you think NAFTA is a success or failure and what would you do to change it?
- The last Senator to be elected President was JFK. Why do you think that is?
- Of what piece of legislation, authored by you, are you most proud?
- What’s you’re greatest accomplishment?
- What has made America the greatest nation on Earth?
- If you could have a conversation with any deceased person, who would it be and why?
- Explain the difference between a democracy and a constitutional republic.
- What’s your favorite cartoon?
- Corporations and shareholders pay millions of dollars to the CEO’s who run the largest, most powerful companies in the world. Why do we continue to pay the CEO of the most powerful nation in the world $400,00/year? What’s the job worth?
- What’s currently the best proposal for tax reform and why?
- Do you think that guaranteeing social security has encouraged workers not to save for retirement?
- If millions of Americans have their retirement accounts tied up in oil company stocks, why is it bad if they make a large profit?
- What’s the difference between profit and profit margin?
- Which of the 7 wonders of the natural world would you most like to visit and why?
- Did you go to private school or public school for the majority of your education? Do your kids go to private or public school?
- What was the last movie you watched and what did you think about it?
- Name the planets in order.
- Mac or PC?
- Where in our Constitution is it stated that anyone has a right to vote for the office of President of the United States?
- Explain the difference between a rule of law and the rule of man.
- Name one right that a state government can exercise without interference from the federal level.
- What was the first gift you bought your wife?
- Who was your favorite teacher, K-12, and why?
I personally think these 25 questions would have made for an extremely interesting debate, and actually given us more insight into who these two men are, what they know, and how they view life. If you could ask any question during a debate, what would it be?
